The different types of marketing agencies

Branding agencies tend to be smaller in size than other agencies and are often referred to as boutique agencies. These agencies specialise in branding and provide a range of services from logo design, to brand name conceptualisation and corporate identity development. They conduct market research to support their brand strategies.

Traditional Advertising Agency

This is the oldest form of marketing company style. Advertising agencies are mostly known by the big-name agencies, for example, Ogilvy, and are made most famous recently by the hit TV show Mad Men.

Up until the internet was launched in 1996, ad agencies were the only game in town.

Advertising agencies specialise in above-the-line work, meaning that the advertising is going to be deployed around a wider target audience, for example television, radio, or billboards. Above-the-line is most applicable when a product is directed for a broader spectrum of consumers, for example a soft drink company might contract an advertising agency to develop ads targeting a broad audience.

Media Buying & Planning Service

Media agencies and media buying agencies often specialise in strategy, research, planning, buying, execution and deployment of all types of media including TV, print, radio, billboards and online & digital.

PR or Public Relations Agency

PR Agencies focus on helping the public understand your company and its products. Creating a strong image of your company to the outside world is a major focus for PR Agencies. Their tactics can include press releases, events, media talk shows, articles and columns in online and print publications.

Marketing Agency

The main difference between a traditional Advertising Agency and a Marketing Agency is the volume of services they will offer. Traditionally, Advertising Agencies have focused on creating and executing advertising campaigns and while some have diversified and now offer many other services, marketing agencies generally do it all. Most of Winnipeg’s Marketing Agencies will refer to themselves as full-service agencies and provide advertising, PR, strategy and planning, digital, branding, photography, video, and other types of marketing.

Digital Agency

Digital marketing agencies provide services that help you make use of the Internet or digital channels in a marketing program. They can help you develop or improve a company’s website or launch a specialised digital service. Such agencies can advise you on ways to use digital channels to communicate and interact with customers and prospects.

All agencies in this category will design websites, social media networks, develop and integrate digital solutions, and more.  Digital agencies can also offer Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or consultants, Paid Search or Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising, and application development (Apps).

Social Media Agency

Social media agencies specialise in creating and managing brands on social media networks. They usually partake in partner networks with social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, & Instagram. These agencies are involved in the channel strategy and the presence of a brand’s social platforms and also assist in the event of crisis communication on behalf of clients.
